The 1990s was a decade that saw strong growth in the Portuguese banking sector, driven by a political and economic context that started the process of liberalizing the financial system that, together with deregulation of financial services at the international level, allowed the privatization and/or re-privatization of domestic banks.
Engexpor accompanied this movement, and was a preferred partner of some of most important domestic and international banks operating in Portugal, whether through involvement in the construction of their headquarters or with advising on and implementing expansion plans for their bank branch networks or business centers.
Over more than a decade, we have carried out project and works management on more than 1,000 bank branches for various financial institutions, including BPI, Banco Fonsecas & Burnay (BPI Group), Banco Popular and Banco Totta (Santander Group), Banco Mello (Millennium bcp Group), Banco Nacional de Crédito Imobiliário and Banco de Comércio e Investimento.
Many of these banks are today part of other institutions, due to the mergers and acquisitions that intensified at the turn of the millennium. This led to a strong concentration in the sector and a consequent reduction in the number of banks.
