Opened in 2010, Leiria Shopping brought to the district capital a wide variety of highly reputed national and international brands and several local shops, operating together in a modern facility, built in compliance with the most demanding construction and architectural standards.
Seeking to follow environmental principles and honour regional heritage, the building’s design was inspired by the Leiria pine forest, the Atlantic coast and the traditional glassblowing industry, thus paying homage to the region’s natural resources and crafts. To this effect, the building reinvents the coastline and features the various materials and elements typically found in the Leiria region: wood, glass, sand and water.
Leiria Shopping was designed in compliance with the most stringent and demanding comfort, safety, accessibility and environmental protection standards. The venture obtained the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001 Standard) certification during the construction stage, as well as the Health & Safety (OHSAS 18001 Standard) certification, the first of its kind awarded to a European shopping centre. The Leiria Shopping Global Accessibility Management System (UNE 170001:2001 Standard) has also been certified.
Engexpor, a trusted partner of Sonae Sierra in the development of the group’s shopping centres, not only in Portugal, but also in other European countries and in Brazil, was responsible for project management, construction management and the Retailers Committee.
