The space that now serves as a leisure destination for Lisbon residents and visitors hosted one of the largest and most successful events in Portuguese territory in 2023: World Youth Day.
To achieve this, Engexpor oversaw a significant portion of the work in the Tagus Park area, being responsible for the design and construction management of the projects carried out on the Lisbon municipality side, in a contract awarded by SRU – Sociedade de Reabilitação Urbana.
Completed in record time, the intervention on the Lisbon side covered 38 hectares and resulted in a space with all the necessary conditions and facilities to host some of the event’s main ceremonies.
In addition to the altar-stage, the enclosure featured a network of pathways and infrastructure to support pilgrims, including areas dedicated to first aid and a medical station, access control tents, structures for communion, and assistance to bishops, a media center, field hospital, sanitary facilities, among other equipment.
The work also encompassed the landscaping of the entire enclosure and the rehabilitation of the old Beirolas landfill, in an intervention planned with the aim of regenerating the entire urban area near the mouth of the Trancão river with the Tagus. With an extension of 100 hectares, this green park continues the redevelopment of the eastern riverside area and is now a dynamic space for sports and leisure.
